January may give you a strong urge to clear and clean things out of your spaces, as many of us feel the ‘urge to purge’ after the stuff-filled holiday season. It just feels really good to start fresh. If you have the urge (like I do!) here are some tips:
- Gather Your Supplies ~ have the basics on hand – trash bags, donation boxes, cleaning supplies
- Commit ~ Block off time on your calendar
- Have a plan ~ though it may not seem necessary, it is always a good idea to have an organized approach to your decluttering and an idea of where each item will end up – in the trash, as a donation, etc.
- Start small ~ avoid the urge to work on every area at once. One drawer, one shelf, one basket at a time – slowly, consistently…
There are lots of new year’s decluttering project guidelines out there – some have you get rid of multiples of items each day – one the first day, two the second day and so on…choose what works for you and remember that a little decluttering is better than none at all.
